My name is Iris Ronayne. I’ve been involved in music education for more than twenty years.

Born in Mecklenburg, Germany, I started taking piano lessons at the age of five and began singing lessons at 15, shortly afterwards singing in a pop group. I then became interested in folk music playing the mandolin, guitar, piano, percussion and singing. I sang in a number of choirs including the BBC Chorus London.

From 1981 – 1985 I studied “Schulmusikerziehung” (school music education) at the “Franz Liszt” – Academy in Weimar. I took tuition in piano, piano accompaniment, guitar, conducting, speech, singing, composing, psychology, education and drama. I was particularly involved in children’s music theatre, covering the 8 – 13 year age group, where young participants performed musicals and operas especially written for children to perform. Particular emphasis was placed on improvisation the aim being to free the children’s imagination and creative potential.

I finished my 4 years of study writing my Theses (100 pages) about children’s music theatre and finished with first class results – Best of that Year in the whole Academy. I am a qualified music teacher for all ages (equivalent to Masters = Diplom Music Pedagogue).

From 1985 – 1988 I taught at the “Franz Liszt” Academy as a teacher for music theory, keyboard harmony, counterpoint, analysis, figured bass, listening skills, composition and children’s music theatre for future teachers. I also gave guitar and piano lessons and conducted the “Wismutchor” Gera, a local mixed choir of 60 singers.

In 1988 I married Michael, my British husband, who is also a musician (Cello), and came to live in Wimbledon. We have four children: Phillip (1989), Edward (1991), Thomas (2000) and Andrew (2002). I became a freelance music teacher in the UK.

I have been running music workshops for children under 3 (with adult) and 3 – 5 years since 1990. I have taught at the Merton Adult Education College, Polka Theatre, Montessori Nursery Wimbledon Park and Queens Road, Penguins Playgroup, Trinity Nursery Wimbledon, St Mary’s, Square One Nursery Putney, Bishop Gilpin Primary CoE school and privately.
I also offer piano lessons for beginners, including adults.

My set objectives for music workshops are:
  • to foster and instil the love of music
  • to express and introduce concepts of rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics through singing, dancing, movement to music, listening and work with instruments (tuned and untuned percussion)
  • enhance the importance of musical awareness and development in young children and promote the use of music as a means of self-expression
  • use of the piano, guitar, wooden and metallic sound makers, recorded music, drums, shakers, glockenspiel, xylophone and other instruments,
  • provide a friendly, relaxed, disciplined and creative atmosphere.
